The Gerona
It’s the capital of Costa Brava and is situated near Barcelona. The distance between Barcelona and Costa Brava is around 100kms. It’s also near to France as it’s hardly 60 kms from Gerona. The place was named as gerund in the Latin language and the place was conquered by Romans. There is a historic centre and you will find thick walls around this centre and so well protected. You get to see a lot of ancient monuments inside this centre that give you a glimpse of the historical venture of this place. All these historic items are preserved in a very nice manner.
Some of the popular monuments found in this place are Santa Maria Cathedral. This is built somewhere between the 11th century and also the 18th century. Inside this monument the tourists get to see a facade of the Baroque style and also many others historic elements belonging to the period of Gothic, renaissance and Romanesque. All these elements depict the rich historical presence of the region and you can learn a lot of historical stories behind these items.
Besides this at the town square you also get to see two magnificent buildings called Casa Pastors and the great Pia Almonia. Casa Pastors is known to be the palace for justice during the renaissance period. Pia Almonia is a building constructed in Gothic style during the 14th century. Currently the Pia Almonia is being used as the Architects chamber and various meetings takes place at this place.
You also get to see many other places in Gerona other than monuments and museums. Jewish quarter called Juderia which is a great place to visit and spend some time to know the facts related to Jews. The place is called as Call Jueu and has many alleys of the medieval period.
There is also a Moorish Bathes which is assumed to be built during the 1194. Its built in the Romanesque style and it has many interpretations of the Moorish culture. These were under the regular use till the end of 15th century.
The place is crossed by a river which is named Omar villa in spain. The right side of this river is known as Barrio Viejo and the left side is termed as barrio De Mercadal. The entire region is interconnected with four different bridges. One of the bridges is made of stone and called Pont de Isabel II and the other is made of iron and called Pont de Eiffel. These two bridges are indeed a great site and you will admire the construction and its architectural style.
