The Precious Metal Platinum
What is Platinum? It is a precious metal that has some very unique properties. Unlike similar bullion like gold or silver, platinum has not been used as coinage for nearly as long. Mainly because platinum was discovered in 1557 (much later than silver and gold.) Platinum is actually called a white metal and in contrast with gold, when most countries become wealthier they are spend an increased amount of their wealth on platinum.
When we look at the history of Platinum, we see that platinum coins were only used as money for the short period of time when the Russian Rubles was in favor. Platinum later became in abundance in 1750 when the Spaniards colonized the northern regions of South America. They first considered it a nuisance because it interfered with gold mining activities. It was soon being used in gun parts, sophisticated batteries and fuel cells, the production of caustic chemicals. In the 19th century there were new refining techniques that increased platinum’s availability. Many collectors today look to collect platinum coins, platinum bars or platinum jewelry, but in times past the bullion platinum was mainly for industrial uses. For example, it was used to make durable laboratory instruments and for crucibles for glass production. Platinum also began to attract goldsmiths and many metal workers began to use platinum to make expensive cutlery and watch-chains.
Platinum bullion is presently seeing low interest among those who seek precious metals. Investors who buy platinum at prices that seem high relative to gold prices usually pay smaller markups than would be the case at smaller premiums to gold. Unfortunately, platinum bullion coin investors who want current year dates on their platinum coins have to pay huge premiums over back dated platinum bullion coin prices.
