Buying Platinum Coins

If you are a collector of platinum coins, like the popular Platinum American Eagle or the Platinum Maple leaf platinum coins, then it is good to know the history of the very unique metal that makes them up. Many government mints strike platinum bullion in this day and age, and finally today’s platinum investor now can choose platinum coins as a legitimate choice. In fact, many people prefer to collect platinum coins over platinum bars.

The history of the platinum that makes up platinum coins goes back only a few hundred years. In the late 1990s, when platinum traded at about the price of gold, investor interest in platinum developed which then led to the minting of Platinum Eagles in a brand new design. These Platinum Eagles were well received, and in the first full year of production over 133,000 of the 1 ounce Platinum Eagles platinum coins were minted.

Why haven’t there been more platinum coins? Well, in the early days increased platinum use was limited because supply was low. In fact, in 1820 Columbia was the only major producer of platinum in the world. Then it simply stopped exporting the white metal.

Later in 1822, platinum was discovered in the gold fields of the Ural Mountains in Russia. That’s what led the Russian government to make platinum into Russian roubles. For the next 18 years, the Russian government minted 500,000 ounces of platinum and allowed platinum to be seen for the first time almost as valuable or popular as gold.

Today, platinum coins are struck from the most prestigious mints in the world. There are Platinum Eagles produced by the U.S. Mint, and Platinum Maple Leafs made by Canada’s Royal Canadian Mint. Also popular for collectors are the Platinum Koalas by Australia’s Perth Mint. However, the supply of these platinum coins is very limited and the coins are very hard to get.
