Deep thoughts on perid

While most precious gems made of mineral are formed and discovered in the earth’s crust, there are two big exceptions. Both diamonds and a lesser-known peridot are both formed much, much deeper in the earth’s mantle.

Pretty deep, right? It sure is. Peridot crystals actually form in magma from the upper mantle up to 55 miles deep! This peridot is then brought to the surface either by the earth’s vibrations or volcanic activity where they are found in surface rocks.

The interesting thing about Peridot is that unlike other gemstones, it only comes in one color: a stunning hue of green. However, the depth of green found in peridot depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure, and varies from yellow-green to olive to brownish green. (The most dazzling shade found in peridot comes when the gemstone has an iron percentage of less than 15% and includes nickel and chromium as trace elements.) Peridot sometimes is referred to as a poor man’s emerald, whish is unfortunate, as it is a dazzling gem all within itself.

For those who like the specifics, Peridot is of the gemstone variety of olivine, which is not itself an official mineral, both is composed of the two minerals fayalite and forsterite. It’s another thing that makes this interesting stone so unique.

The best peridot known has been sourced in Burma, although it has been discovered in China, and Pakistan—and here in the United States. In fact, America was the largest producer of peridot for many  years. It was often found in the desert regions and in Indian reservations.

If you’re looking for a great gift for someone born in the month of August, peridot jewelry is a great choice as it is the birthstone of August. But you really don’t need a reason to buy this dazzling gem. Peridot makes fine pendants, bracelets, rings and more.
